Malfunction hits delivery of baggage at Pudong

Over 100 pieces of luggage missed the intended destination after the baggage handling and distribution system malfunctioned at the Pudong International Airport in the middle of the Spring Festival travel rush.

The Internet was buzzing with complaints from irate passengers who reached their destination last weekend only to be told that the baggage were still lying at the Pudong airport.

“Three of the four families in the first-class cabin on my flight lost their luggage. The airline confirmed later that the luggage was still in Pudong,” a passenger on a Sichuan Airlines flight from Pudong to Chengdu in Sichuan Province claimed.

The malfunction hit flights from Pudong to Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces over the weekend.

Passengers posted complaints on their microblogs about how they were stuck without clothes, while others said they were waiting for important contracts and official stamps before the start of the holiday.

“I had to buy underwear in Chongqing as my baggage did not arrive,” a passenger flying China Eastern airlines complained.

The luggage delays on outbound flights started on Friday and got worse by Saturday when some 100 pieces were stuck at the airport.

The airport and airline staff had to distribute them manually on the following flights, a source at the airport said.

Most of the delayed baggage had already been sent to their destinations, he said.

The delays also affected Dalian airport in the northeast Liaoning Province with some 130 pieces held back. Both Pudong and Dalian airports have announced that the baggage will be delivered to the respective addresses for free.
