Mall swaps computers for culture
ELECTRONIC product malls in downtown Xujiahui are reinventing themselves as cultural and entertainment centers under major renovations, officials said over the weekend.
In October, a 720-seat theater will open in Metro City, a city landmark with a giant sphere in its design.
And the second phase of the nearby Pacific Digital City will be demolished to make way for a new complex for entertaining and recreation, said the Xuhui District Commerce Commission.
Meanwhile, Buynow Mall will cut 30 percent of its digital stores, replacing many with restaurants.
Sales in digital malls have been falling in recent years, due to the impact of online business, the commission said.
The 68 million yuan (US$11.1million) Shang Theater on the fifth floor of Metro City will stage a production by Taiwan-based playwright and director Stan Lai.
“Metro City will be turned into a cultural and business venue, complete with stores, bookstores, cinemas and theaters,” said Metro City general manger Xu Chunhua.
