Malls change sales plans in wake of Bund tragedy
SHOPPING malls and department stores are altering plans for sales which traditionally attract huge numbers of shoppers over the Spring Festival in the wake of the New Year’s Eve crush on the Bund in which 36 people died and 49 were injured.
The Yaohan Department Store in the Pudong New Area said it would be scaling back Spring Festival promotions and ensuring that safety is paramount.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai New World Co Ltd in Huangpu District said it is currently working out its promotional plans that will focus on safety.
The Shanghai Commerce Commission said earlier that customer number estimates must be provided and detailed safety plans submitted before performances and displays can take place at commercial premises.
If these look likely to attract numbers where there could be problems with crowd flow, events may be canceled, said the authorities.
As sales attract masses of shoppers eager to grab a bargain, leading to possible crowd problems, these should be strictly controlled, said a notification issued by the commission on Monday.
Promotional activities can only be staged once approved by authorities and beefed up security is in place to address potential risks, it added.
The flow of customers should be strictly monitored and controlled when sales promotions are held, the commission said.
It added that businesses must address potential safety risks found in checks. Failure to do so will lead to the event being canceled.
Checks by commission inspectors are being stepped up at shopping malls, department stores, big restaurants and exhibition centers.
The Chinese Lunar New Year falls on February 19.
