Man accused of killing colleague with hammer

A man suspected of killing his female colleague with a hammer and a knife has been arrested for murder, prosecutors in Minhang District said yesterday.
Prosecutors allege that the man, surnamed Wei, killed her so that he would not have to pay back over 70,000 yuan (US$10,496) the victim paid him for finding her son a job in Shanghai.
According to prosecutors, Wei told them that the victim, surnamed Yuan, said she wanted to help her son find a job in the city at the beginning of 2014 and he offered to assist her. Yuan then gave him 40,000 yuan as a reward.
In addition to the money, Yuan gave him many gifts, including vouchers and cigarettes, worth about 30,000 yuan.
However, when Wei was unable to find a job for Yuan’s son, she demanded that he return the money and he agreed to do so.
Two years later, however, he had not done so and she once again demanded her money back, threatening to report his behavior to his family and their company. At this point, Wei allegedly went to Yuan’s residential complex at dawn on July 3 armed with a hammer and a knife.
Prosecutors said he lured Yuan into an elevator and hit her on the head several times with the hammer, before slashing her throat, face and wrist with the knife.
He then became trapped in the elevator when it became stuck between the ground floor and the second floor.
After the elevator was opened by workers, Wei claimed he had been knocked unconscious and dragged into the elevator. When he woke up, he found his money had been stolen and Yuan was dead, he said.
Wei later confessed to the murder during police questioning.
