A man has been caught by police in the Pudong New Area on suspicion of stealing iPhones from young students in over 20 cases of fraud in several districts, police said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Tao, would claim he lost his way and his phone ran out of battery. He borrowed iPhones from middle or primary school students, police said.

Tao took the phones and claimed he needed to meet his friend at the next crossroad, officers said. Then he disappeared with the phone.

Tao carried out the scam in districts including Baoshan, Hongkou and Yangpu, police said. The value of the thefts was 50,000 yuan (US$8,169).
