Man arrested for ‘fatally stabbing’ wife at market
A man in his 60s who allegedly stabbed his wife to death at a wet market last month has been arrested, the Fengxian District prosecutor said yesterday.
The 64-year-old man, surnamed Niu, started beating his wife, surnamed Liang, frequently after his business in Henan Province began to fail, police said.
Niu rushed to Situan Town in Fengxian on March 17 after learning that Liang was there.
After a three-day search, he found her at the entrance of a church, and asked her to come back. After Liang refused, Niu followed her to a wet market. At a meat stall, Niu once again tried to persuade her to return again, but again she refused.
He accused Liang of having an affair with another man and then took a meat cleaver from the stall and struck her in the face with it. Liang later died in hospital and Niu was arrested at a hotel.
Highlighting the family’s troubled background, police said that in 1986, Niu’s mentally ill younger sister killed his son and injured his daughter with a knife.
