Man arrested for hiding car plates to extort car owners
A man suspected of stealing car plates and extorting money from the owners has been arrested for extortion, according to prosecutors of Jing’an District.
The suspect, surnamed Wang, only targeted non-local plates and just demanded 200 yuan (US$28.8) in each ease as he knew the victims would mostly rather pay the money than going through complicated procedures to get a new plate out of town.
Prosecutors said Wang always left his mobile phone number on a note pasted on a side mirror of the cars. After the owners called him, he asked them to transfer 200 yuan to his bank account and then told them where to get back their plates, usually hidden by him in nearby places, such as in a toilet of a Metro station or inside an ATM room. He had extorted at least three people since November, prosecutors said, adding that a further investigation is still ongoing.
