Man arrested over killing of love rival

A MAN has been arrested for stabbing dead his ex- girlfriend’s boyfriend, Putuo District prosecutors said yesterday.

The 25-year-old surnamed Chen had a relationship with a woman, named Xiaoqing, in their hometown in 2009 but she moved to Shanghai and broke up with him last year. Chen visited Shanghai several times trying unsuccessfully to woo her back, prosecutors said.

He then began to harass her, getting progressively more threatening.

Last October, Xiaoqing’s home was vandalized and the word “kill” was written on a wall in her red mail polish.

Chen admitted to police he acted out of anger when he saw her boyfriend’s belongings at her home, prosecutors said.

Chen continued harassing and threatening Xiaoqing and her boyfriend that she was forced to move.

But Chen tracked her down.

Chen, wearing a hat and mask, followed Xiaoqing and her boyfriend as they returned home on the night of October 17.

She confronted Chen, who then attacked her with an electric baton, prosecutors said, and then attacked her boyfriend with a knife. Chen fled, leaving the man motionless on the ground as he bled to death.

He was caught on November 18 in Beijing and sent back to Shanghai three days later.

Police said he had paid 800 yuan (US$116) for a tracking device to monitor Xiaoqing.

“I want to see her every day. And I wore hat and mask so she wouldn’t recognize me,” prosecutors quoted him as saying.

He said he carried the shock baton and knife for protection as he had quarrelled with Xiaoqing’s boyfriend.

“I didn’t mean to kill anyone. I attacked them on an impulse. I regret that,” he told police, prosecutors said.
