Man beat cop as he tried to spring his pimp mother
A 22-YEAR-OLD man who beat up a police officer to keep his mother, a pimp, from being caught was sentenced to four months of detention at his trial yesterday, the Hongkou District People's Court ruled.
Li Jianxin, a Hubei Province native, was caught by police on the night of September 25 after he choked and beat an officer in an attempt to "rescue" his mother, prosecutors said.
The officer was trying to take two pimps, including Li's mother, back to the police station after reports that pimps were soliciting clients on Tangshan Road. Li was subdued by back-up officers and was detained on the same day for obstructing public affairs. The pimps who fled while Li was fighting the officer were also caught.
"I didn't think of anything before I took action. I thought the man was a fake cop and was making trouble for my mother," Li told prosecutors.
The court heard that Li grabbed the officer's police ID and tore it apart when the officer identified himself. An injury assessment showed the officer was slightly injured and had bruises on his arm and hand.
"I'm deeply sorry. I have realized my mistake," Li said as he pleaded guilty in court without trying to defend himself.
The court gave him a lighter punishment since he confessed.
"The punishment is merciful," Li told a reporter from his cell. Li will stay in detention under police control instead of going to prison before his scheduled release date of January 25.
According to the Chinese laws, those who disrupt public affairs, usually law enforcement actions, face up to three years in prison.
