Man charged for making arson threat
A MAN has been charged with threatening to set fire to a logistics company where he once worked, prosecutors in Baoshan District said yesterday.
According to prosecutors, on January 28, the suspect, surnamed Hu, called Shanghai police from Changzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province, claiming he had doused the premises in gasoline and set it alight.
Authorities in Baoshan were alerted and reacted by closing local roads and evacuating workers from the building. Fire officers conducted a search, but found no evidence of a blaze.
Workers were allowed back inside four hours later, prosecutors said.
Hu is alleged to have made the hoax call after failing to get compensation from his former employer for an injury he sustained while working there.
According to prosecutors, Hu’s right foot was crushed in an accident involving a forklift truck. The injury led to him having a toe amputated.
Hu said he made several appeals to the company for compensation but was repeatedly turned down.
He was detained by police in Changzhou on February 3.
