Man charged over hotel testicle surgery
A man who allegedly made a botched attempt to perform a sex change operation on an Internet acquaintance has been arrested for practising medicine without a license, the Pudong New Area People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
According to prosecutors, the man, surnamed Zhao, said he met the victim, surnamed Tong, via a QQ group in March and the two discussed sex change procedures after Tong said he wanted to have his testicles removed.
Tong told prosecutors that he agreed to let Zhao perform the surgery for 1,000 yuan (US$150) after he assured him it would be safe.
Tong arrived in Shanghai on May 7 and checked into a hotel where Zhao allegedly used a scalpel purchased online to remove one of his testicles. When Zhao went out to buy an adult diaper for Tong, Tong cut off the other testicle by himself. Zhao returned to find Tong bleeding profusely and called an ambulance.
Prosecutors said Zhao had no medical license and learned how to perform surgery from e-books and online videos. Zhao was arrested at the scene.
