Man charged with stabbing 3 people
A MAN has been formally charged with stabbing three people in separate incidents in Songjiang District earlier this year, local prosecutors said yesterday.
The Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said the suspect, surnamed Zhang, stabbed two members of the public in unprovoked attacks on May 7.
The following day, he stabbed a police assistant who had pursued him to investigate an alleged sexual assault on a woman, they said.
When confronted, Zhang repeatedly stabbed the official, surnamed Jin, until being disarmed by Jin’s colleague, prosecutors said.
The police were called and Zhang was taken into custody, where he allegedly confessed to sexually assaulting more than 20 women in a matter of weeks.
During a psychological assessment, Zhang was determined to have been suffering from depression at the time of the stabbing, but prosecutors said that this did not absolve him from his alleged crimes.
