Man convicted of murder with a homemade bomb

A Shanghai man who sent his former girlfriend a homemade bomb in a murder attempt for dumping him was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison by a Pudong court said today.

The 35-year-old convict, surnamed He, was caught in Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province after his girlfriend, surnamed Xu, reported to the police.

Prosecutors said He and Xu met in an online chat room and developed a relationship. The pair divorced their spouses and moved into an apartment on Yangsi Road in February 2011.

But their happy time was short-lived because Xu asked He to buy an apartment in Shanghai as a condition for their marriage. When He said he couldn't afford one, Xu dumped him, the court heard.

Feeling hurt, He made a bomb with firecrackers, steel balls and a remote control device and delivered it to Xu's home. The bomb was received by Xu's parents.

The old couple realized it was a bomb after peeping through its broken paper box. The bomb was later detonated in a safe place and police said it could kill people standing within a radius of seven meters.
