Man critical, wife injured as blaze engulfs bedroom

A man is in critical condition after being badly burnt in a fire at his home in Zhabei District yesterday, police said.
The victim suffered extensive burns to his whole body and is in intensive care at Ruijin Hospital. His wife was also injured, suffering burns to her face, but her condition is said to be less serious.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire and have not ruled out the possibility of arson.
Firefighters said the blaze started on the couple’s bed and quickly engulfed the whole room at 236 Menggu Road.
Witnesses called the emergency services about 10am after smelling gas and seeing smoke coming from the room.
A neighbor said the man and his wife, who hail from Anhui Province, make a living in Shanghai from recycling.
