Man dealing in fake notes gets 10 years

A MAN was sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined 20,000 yuan (US$3,036) for making and selling counterfeit notes with a face value of 80,000 yuan, the Minhang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

The suspect, identified as Wang Yifan, was caught with the fake notes, note-printing machine and anti-falsification papers that he said he had bought online.

Wang sold the fake bills to an online buyer, Shao Xiao, in neighboring Jiangsu Province. Shao was arrested by Jiangsu police after which Wang was tracked down.

Wang told Minhang District People’s Court that he came up with the idea of making fake notes after he purchased few counterfeit notes himself early last year. He said he bought the fake currencies with a total face value of 1,500 yuan from an online seller. However, they turned out to be poor quality notes and he could not use them.

He then decided to make the counterfeit notes himself. He downloaded pictures of RMB from the Internet and enhanced their quality on editing software like Photoshop. He bought a printing machine and anti-falsification paper, which is usually used in contract and document printing. The paper has a silver line that is similar to the magnetic security mark that is found on real notes.

Wang then started looking for buyers online and got in touch with Shao. He couriered some of the fake notes to Shao, who wasn’t impressed with the quality.

A despondent Wang then cooked up a plan. He got in touch with Shao again from another online chatting account and claimed he wanted to buy some counterfeit currencies. Shao fell for the trick and reconnected with Wang and asked him to send several hundreds 100-yuan fake notes.

Shao was arrested in May last year after the deal. Jiangsu police then passed on the results of their investigation to their counterparts in Shanghai. Wang was nabbed from Minhang District soon after.
