Man detained for impersonating traffic law enforcement officer

A man who cheated the driver of an unlicensed cab out of 7,000 yuan was detained for pretending to be a traffic law enforcement team member (US$1,128), local police said yesterday.

The 20-year-old suspect surnamed Qiao got into a car in front of Xujing Health Center on Jinghua Road in Qingpu District on November 25.

Qiao told the driver to pull over after 1 kilometer and asked him for his license, claiming to be a member of Qingpu District’s traffic law enforcement team. Qiao told the driver his license would be suspended when taking out his cellphone and pretended to call his “team.”

Drivers offering unlicensed taxi services can have their license suspended for three to six months and fined between 10,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan.

The driver surnamed Chen begged Qiao to “solve the case privately,” according to police. Chen gave Qiao 7,000 yuan, but when he returned home became suspicious of Qiao’s identity because he did not show his work card. However, Chen did not report to police since he was also breaking the law.

On December 1, Chen drove past Xujing Health Center again and spotted Qiao talking to another driver. He was sure Qiao was trying to repeat his trick and called police.

Qiao later admitted to police he thought the trick was an easy way to make money.

Chen was fined for providing unlicensed taxi services.
