Man extorts money from hospitals by putting mosquito in drip bottle
A man who allegedly extorted 6,700 yuan (US$1,052) from two Shanghai community hospitals by secretly putting hairs or small bugs in his saline solution bottles has been arrested, Pudong's prosecutors said today.
The head nurse of one hospital said the man surnamed Liu claimed there was a mosquito in his bottle and asked to see the pharmacist on duty one day in May.
The pharmacist said he had to contact the drug supplier first and gave Liu his mobile number. Liu called the pharmacist the next day and demanded 5,000 yuan for private settlement.
The pharmacist told prosecutors he paid Liu 3,500 yuan because he thought Liu was a very difficult patient and he wanted to protect the hospital's reputation.
Liu said he used a syringe to inject the mosquito into the sterile saline solution bottle when he was in the hospital toilet. He also confessed having used the same trick to extort 3,200 yuan from another community hospital.
