Man fined for car stickers

A MAN has been fined for decorating his car to look like a news vehicle owned by China Central Television.

The owner of a white Honda was detained on Monday, police said.

Police became suspicious about the vehicle after noticing it had occupied a parking space near a KTV outlet in Yangpu District for several days.

When its owner, surnamed Li, finally approached the vehicle, officers moved in.

Li said he spent 800 yuan (US$131) on the stickers from a vehicle accessory shop, as he thought it would make his car “look cool.”

He was ordered to remove them and was fined 200 yuan.

According to police, car owners can be charged between 200 and 2,000 yuan for decorating their cars to look like those owned by government bodies or the emergency services.

On taobao.com, there are about 30 stores offering stickers featuring the CCTV logo for between 12 and 29 yuan.

One online vendor told Shanghai Daily he didn’t know it was illegal for such stickers to be attached to private cars.
