Man fined for selling ‘fake’ water
A MAN has been sentenced to five months’ criminal detention suspended for five months, and fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,600) for selling tap water disguised as well-known brands.
He was also found guilty of selling water without a license, the Jinshan People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The defendant, surnamed Li, filtered water from a tap into plastic barrels, to which he then added spurious production dates and counterfeit labels to mislead his customers, prosecutors said.
Between October 2014 and July 2015, Li made more than 60,000 yuan from the sale of the water, samples of which were found to contain more than 12 times the legal amount of nitrites.
Police in Jinshan were alerted to his activities after receiving a tip-off.
