Man gets 14 months in jail for eBay fraud

A MAN who swindled overseas buyers of US$23,000 by promising to sell them electronic products on eBay was sentenced to 14 months in jail by the Pudong New Area People’s Court.
Prosecutors said the 28-year-old man, surnamed Cui, opened two eBay accounts in 2012 to sell electronic products such as surveillance cameras and chargers.
Cui started to sell the products through unreserved bidding in 2013 to attract overseas buyers. In May alone, the two accounts achieved 4,650 deals worth US$260,000.
However, the prices were lower than his expectations.
After realizing he was losing money, Cui stopped delivering the goods, but continued to receive new transactions.
In November 2013, eBay’s Shanghai branch reported the matter to Pudong police, claiming Cui had not settled 1,712 transactions.
Cui was caught at his home in Shenzhen. His family paid 400,000 yuan (US$65,311) to eBay as compensation, according to the court.
