Man gets 15 years for fraud, taking drugs

A MAN from Taiwan was yesterday sentenced at Jing’an District People’s Court to 15 years in prison and fined 20,000 yuan (US$3,250) for fraud and drug possession.
From 2011 to 2013, the 33-year-old, surnamed Liu, cheated dozens of people, including 14 from Shanghai, out of 2 million yuan, the court heard.
Liu’s trick was to pose as a police officer or other official, and tell people over the phone they had been convicted of a crime and had to pay a fine.
To add credence to his claim, Liu directed his victims to a replica version of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate’s website he had created and which contained fake arrest warrants for his targets.
A Shanghai woman surnamed Zheng said she received a call last year from an official who said she was wanted by police in relation to an online gambling investigation.
When she went to Liu’s website she saw her fake arrest warrant and promptly transferred 1.3 million yuan to his account, the court said.
Police staged a manhunt and traced Liu to Guangdong Province. He was found in a house with 150,000 yuan in cash and drugs, which he said was for his personal use.
