Man gets death for rape, murder

A MAN who strangled a cyclist after robbing and raping her was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for murder, robbery and rape, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday.
He was given a reprieve because he had paid a compensation to the victim’s family, the court said.
The murderer, surnamed Zhang, was a compulsive gambler who had run out of money. He saw a woman cycling on the morning of May 21, 2013 in Gaodong Town in the Pudong New Area.
He pulled her from the cycle and dragged her to a green belt close by.
He raped and then strangulated her after finding nothing of substance in her purse except a cellphone, a camera and some bank cards.
Zhang was captured by police six days later on May 27 in a cyber cafe in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province.
