Man gets death with reprieve for murdering mom
A 53-year-old man was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday for killing his elderly mother over division of their housing relocation compensation, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court ruled.
Prosecutors said the convict, Liu Xinyi, broke into his mother's home on the night of February 16. He climbed over the wall, cut the window with a diamond-tipped knife and sneaked into the room where his mother was asleep.
The son hit his mother's head with a hammer and fled to a town in neighboring Zhejiang Province. Liu was caught on February 28 outside a Shanghai court when he was reading the announcements of a court session in which he was being sued by his mother, the court heard. The son and mother had been in court repeatedly after their old houses in Minhang District were demolished in 2009 and the family got a sum of compensation.
Liu said he and his mother had reached an agreement over the ownership of their old houses under the mediation of judges in 2002. The content of the agreement was not disclosed.
In September 2009, the Liu family got three properties with money for compensation. After that, the mother asked to divide the properties and the money but Liu disagreed.
The court heard that Liu's mother then sued Liu and his wife to demand compensation. The latest suit was filed in January. As their conflicts worsened, Liu decided to kill his mother, prosecutors said.
The court said Liu planned the murder and was so cruel that he should be severely punished. Liu would not likely be executed but remain in prison for two years until his penalty is set. He would not get less than 25 years in prison.
