Man gets divorce as relocation scam fails
SHANGHAI judges yesterday supported a man's request to divorce his wife as the couple, previously unknown to each other, married for the sole purpose of gaining more relocation compensation.
The Jing'an District People's Court granted the divorce to Wang Hong, a single man in his early 60s who lives in Hongkou District.
Wang heard in October 2008 that his apartment was going to be demolished. In such circumstances, home owners are entitled to relocation compensation.
The relocation compensation was based on the number of family members, thus Wang decided to have a "flash marriage" to get more money.
A friend introduced him to Cao Jing, who is crippled, on January 1, 2009. They married that day. However, Wang has never been relocated.
Judges said that it is immoral for people to marry just to cheat money.
