Man gets jail sentence for making fake cigarettes

A man who produced more than 240 kilograms of fake Chunghwa, a leading cigarette brand in China, in his underground workshop was sentenced to four years and three months in prison.

The convict, surnamed He, was also fined 40,000 yuan (US$6,268) for producing inferior and counterfeit goods, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.

Prosecutors said He, 43, bought inferior cigarettes and repackaged them with the same paper and labels as the famous Chunghwa cigarettes made by Shanghai Tobacco (Group) Co.

Police seized 1,277 cartons of counterfeit Chunghwa weighing more than 240 kilograms and 106,000 pieces of cigarette rolling paper and packet paper in his workshop at 689 Gubei Road in Baoshan District on May 28.

He's illegal business involved more than 825,000 yuan, the prosecutors said.

A native of Nantong City in neighboring Jiangsu Province, He started the counterfeit business in March 2010 and bought shoddy cigarettes from a friend at 750 yuan per carton and after repackaging sold the bogus Chunghwa cigarettes at 1,250 yuan per carton, while genuine Chunghwa cigarettes cost at least 15,000 yuan per carton.
