Man given 14 months for selling fake lube

A MAN who sold almost 120,000 yuan (US$19,300) worth of counterfeit engine oil online was yesterday sentenced to 14 months in prison.

The Pudong New Area People’s Court found 32-year-old Jian Hongsheng guilty of selling the lubricant — falsely branded as being manufactured by Royal Dutch Shell — on taobao.com between December 2013 and May last year. His revenue in the period totaled 117,845 yuan, the court said.

In court, Jian admitted to buying oil from a local manufacturer and decanting it into cans with fake Shell labels.

He said he operated from a warehouse in Minhang District, but denied making large sums from the venture.

He said he made just 7 to 8 yuan per can, or 10,000 yuan over the period.

Jian was caught by police at his workshop in May last year. Officers also seized 68 full cans labeled as Shell and other paraphernalia related to his fraudulent activities.

The unsold items had a market value of 7,257 yuan, the court said.

In his defense, Jian said he was initially fooled into selling fake products by another oil retailer and then got hooked. Despite his appeal for leniency and the promise to return all of his ill-gotten gains, the court handed down a custodial sentence.
