Man given 7 years for tricking colleagues
A man who cheated his colleagues out of almost 300,000 yuan (US$46,000) by claiming to be able to get them places on sought-after university courses has been sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud, the Jiading District People’s Court said yesterday.
The defendant, surnamed Fan, was also fined 14,000 yuan after being found guilty of tricking 20 of his workmates into parting with 291,800 yuan between February and October 2014.
Fan told his colleagues that he had contacts at a prestigious university — which the court did not name — and could, for between 30,000 and 70,000 yuan per person, secure them a place on the course of their choice.
When the “victims” — who lost out while trying to buy their way to academic success — found out Fan was unable to deliver on his promises, they contacted the police.
An investigation showed that Fan had significant gambling debts and used the money he cheated from his workmates to pay them off.
