Man held after fatal collision

A scooter rider has been arrested after fatally injuring a cyclist and fleeing from the scene in downtown Shanghai, police said yesterday.

The suspect, a male surnamed Meng, was riding an unlicensed scooter and illegally carrying an adult passenger, police said.

The collision happened on Liangcheng Road, Hongkou District, near Chezhan Road S., about 11pm on March 3.

The cyclist, a 65-year-old man surnamed Tan, was riding in the bike lane when Meng overtook him from behind and knocked him down, police said.

Meng was caught two days later and confessed, according to the police. Meanwhile, Tan died of his injuries.

Meng told police he had borrowed the scooter from a colleague.

Police in Hongkou District said Meng could face up to three years in prison.
