A MAN has been detained in connection with the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl on her first day at work, police said yesterday.

The body of the girl, surnamed Cheng, was found in bushes on Tuesday morning in Heqing Town.

Her parents had earlier reported their daughter missing.

Police held the 20-year-old suspect, a Henan Province native surnamed Zhang, in an Internet cafe in Heqing at 3pm on Tuesday.

The family of the victim said Monday was her first day at work distributing leaflets in Lujiazui.

The murder was first made public by a Weibo microblogger.

He wrote that a girl who was a member of the local East Asia soccer fan club — of which he was also a member — was murdered on her way home.

The microblogger posted pictures of a man who he said was the murderer.

It is unclear how he had this information.
