Man held for assault on woman

A man has been detained on suspicion of assaulting a woman and stealing her handbag, police said yesterday.
The incident happened on Wednesday as the 27-year-old victim was getting out of her car at her apartment complex in Minhang District.
The woman told police that someone grabbed her by the throat from behind and began hitting her as she was exiting the vehicle. Her attacker made off with a handbag containing two iPhones and 300 yuan (US$46) in cash.
However, he was quickly detained when the woman’s neighbors heard the commotion and went to her aid.
Working together they blocked the exits and made sure the suspect could not leave the compound, police said, adding that one person was armed with a stick.
The suspect was later detained after being found hiding under a car. The incident was also captured on surveillance cameras, they said.
The woman suffered injuries to her face, hands and legs, police said.
