Man held for killing ‘landlady’ at viewing

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a woman while trying to rob her in her own home, Minhang District prosecutors office said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Lou, contacted his victim, surnamed Li, after she advertised for a roommate on

Lou asked if he could view the flat on behalf of a female friend who was looking for a place. Li agreed and a meeting was arranged for May 1.

However, once inside the property, Lou attempted to steal Li’s purse. When she cried for help, Lou grabbed her by the throat and pushed her into the bathroom. He then forced her head into a full bathtub and held her down until she drowned.

He escaped with 300 yuan (US$48) and three bank cards, but was later caught by police.

Meanwhile, Minhang prosecutors said they have filed charges against two men who raped a woman in similar circumstances in April.

The victim, surnamed Zhang, advertised her apartment for rent on, and on April 12 received a call from a man who said he and a friend were interested.

While viewing the apartment, however, the pair threatened Zhang with a knife and demanded money.

She gave the men 100 yuan in cash, and her bank card and cellphone.

She also gave them her password and the pair later withdrew 2,500 yuan from her account.

Before leaving the property, one of the two men raped Zhang, prosecutors said.

They warned women letting properties not to arrange viewings alone. If necessary they should ask the building’s security guards to accompany them, they said.
