Man held for profiting from stolen videos
A 28-YEAR-OLD man, surnamed Duan, has been detained for allegedly stealing videos from other websites and raking in a profit of over 1 million yuan (US$160,000) from ad revenues, local police said yesterday.
Investigation on wowo123.com, which was created by Duan, started in March when a Shanghai-based intellectual property company complained to the police that contents from 10 legal video websites were being copied and played on the site illegally.
Duan allegedly used “inline linking” to enable playing of over 500 films, TV series and reality shows on his website which was originally called wowody.net.
Since the end of 2013, Duan made 30,000 to 40,000 yuan every month from distributors of ads on his website, police said.
Duan, who’s from Shandong Province, was caught in Hainan Province where he was based. Another person, surnamed Chen, who helped Duan to edit the contents on his site, is in Shandong and under investigation.
