Man held for smashing train window

POLICE have arrested a man who is said to have broken a Metro train window with the buckle of his belt, officers said yesterday.

The passenger, surnamed Zhang, was traveling on Metro Line 1 about 9pm on Tuesday when the incident occurred.

According to a witness, a man suddenly started hitting a train window with the belt buckle. Alarmed passengers quickly moved away from the scene, said the witness.

A picture posted by a netizen showed the window smashed, with fragments of glass on the seats below.

The man left the train when it arrived at Changshu Road Station, according to the witness.

The Metro operator then had the train emptied and suspended from service.

Police held the suspect yesterday. Investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, a man from Jiangsu Province was detained for setting fire to Metro facilities at People’s Square Station, police said yesterday.

The man, in his 50s, was drinking a bottle of baijiu in the station at 6pm last Thursday. He soon began jostling with passengers, smashed the liquor bottle to the ground and tried to burn the barrier belts with a lighter.

Police arrived and took him away. Officers said the man was drinking due to personal problems and got into arguments with other commuters which then escalated.
