Man held over US$1m jewel theft
A man has been detained on suspicion of stealing more than 6 million yuan (US$966,000) worth of jewelry and other valuables from private homes in Qingpu District.
The suspect, surnamed Yang, broke into three villas in a community on Yinggang Road E. in Xujing Town on three separate occasions in late February and early March, police said.
Yang is a migrant worker from southwest China’s Guizhou Province who had been working in Shanghai since last July. After resigning from his job and using up his savings, he resorted to a life of crime, police said.
Yang was detained in his home village of Daying on March 11, they said.
