Man held over plastic-sale scam
A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of selling US$6.7 million worth of stolen polyethylene to five separate buyers, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Yang, rented a section of a warehouse in the city’s pilot free trade zone in 2013. Inside it he discovered more than 1,500 tons of the polymer belonging to another company, they said.
Yang then set about selling the goods to various buyers across the country, prosecutors said.
The alleged scam came to light when the buyers arrived at the warehouse to collect the polyethylene only to discover there was not enough to go round.
