Man in jail for raping girlfriend's mom
A MAN who raped his girlfriend's mother was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday, Baoshan District People's Court said yesterday.
Although Liu Changren, 32, was charged on four counts of rape in the case, the court found him guilty on only one count.
The court ruled Liu raped the victim, who was close to 60 years old, on October 8 after he had been drinking alcohol. It dismissed charges that Liu raped the woman three times in February and March 2008 due to a lack of evidence.
Liu and his girlfriend opened a tattoo store in 2007 and the girlfriend's mother came to live with them after her husband died of cancer in January 2008.
On the afternoon of October 8, Liu saw the woman making a long-distance phone call in the store and scolded her for spending too much money, the court heard.
The two quarreled loudly and Liu suggested going elsewhere to avoid affecting the store's business. They went to her residence, and once they arrived Liu covered the woman's mouth and raped her, the court heard.
Liu's friends testified that he had been drinking liquor and beer earlier that day.
The woman's sister learned of the rape when she found her crying that afternoon. The sister accompanied her to a police station.
Prosecutors also accused Liu of raping his girlfriend's mother three times between February and March last year.
When the woman first arrived in the city she was in poor health and depressed, the court heard. She said she thought she had the same symptoms as her dead husband.
Liu told her she was possessed by the evil spirit of her dead husband and that the only way to get rid of it was to have sex with a young man like him, prosecutors said.
She eventually agreed to have sex with Liu, according to prosecutors.
The court said they acquitted Liu on these three separate rape charges due to insufficient evidence.
