Man jailed for attempted rape on female tenant
A man in his 60s was sentenced to two years in prison for attempting to rape a young tenant who shared the same apartment, the Songjiang District People's Court said today.
The convict, surnamed Gao, lived in a rented apartment in Songjiang and sublet one room to a young couple to reduce his rent cost.
One night in April, Gao woke up and went to the bathroom. He saw the young wife surnamed Zhao sleeping alone in the room with the door unlocked.
Prosecutors said Gao sneaked into the room and tried to have sex with Zhao but the victim woke up and resisted fiercely. She then called the police and her husband who was on a night shift.
When Gao was detained by police, his family begged Zhao to change her testimony and settle the case outside the court. Zhao agreed and told the police that Gao might have walked into a wrong room.
Two days later, police questioned Zhao again and found out the truth.
Judges are reminding people not to make a false testimony and a private settlement with a suspect otherwise they will face legal punishment.
