Man jailed for killing grandson
A man who conspired with a doctor to fatally poison his newborn grandson because he was born with a birth defect was jailed for murder, the Chongming County People’s Court said yesterday.
According to the court, the family learned from a hospital test that the baby was going to have a birth defect about two weeks before the delivery. After the baby was delivered on July 15 with a cleft lip, the man, surnamed Peng, went to he office of the doctor, surnamed Zhou, several times seeking his help in “handling” the baby. The two then hatched a plan to poison the baby. On July 17, Peng injected it with a fatal dose of potassium chloride provided by Zhou.
Peng surrendered himself to police two days later and Zhou was apprehended at the hospital the next day. They both confessed to the murder.
Peng was given a lenient seven-year sentence because he turned himself in.
Zhou received a five-year jail term for being an accessory to murder.
