Man jailed for stabbing woman in public toilet

A man was sentenced to 11 years in jail for attempted murder and theft after stabbing a woman repeatedly in a public toilet when she found his hideout by accident.

Xuhui District People’s Court said yesterday the woman, surnamed Zhou, survived the attack but received more than 20 wounds to her head, face, neck, abdomen and arms.

Zhou entered a public toilet on Qinjiang Road in Xuhui District at 3am last July 23 after finishing her street barbecue business. When she closed the door, she found a man inside who then attacked her with a knife. Zhou fell to the ground, and the man, surnamed Sang, took her handbag and fled.

Zhou’s husband, who was waiting outside, heard his wife’s cries for help and called the police, who soon identified Sang from a surveillance video. He was detained in Anhui, his home province.

Sang admitted the charges of attempted murder and theft. He told the court he was carrying a knife to break into a nearby gaming machine when he heard someone approaching. He said he hid in the toilet but was discovered by Zhou, and he panicked and attacked her.

Besides the 11-year jail term, Sang also got a three-year deprivation of political rights and was fined 1,000 yuan (US$147).
