Man on trial for polygamy and fraud

A 45-YEAR-OLD man is on trial for polygamy and fraud at the Xuhui District People’s Court.

The man reportedly had four wives in different provinces and duped them of around 4.1 million yuan (US$660,920) by claiming to be a board member of HSBC Holdings PLC. He was in fact unemployed.

One of the “wives,” surnamed Qiu, filed a report with Xuhui District police on November 4, 2013, claiming her husband Shen Liping was married to another woman, surnamed Ding. She said Shen had cheated her of 2.6 million yuan.

Shen was caught by police in a local hotel in April 2014. After investigation, police found that he had not only married Qiu and Ding, but was also married to two other women in other provinces.

Shen also had three children from different partners.

Qiu said she met Shen in Shanghai in March 2012. Shen told her he was one of the board members of HSBC board and that he was single after divorcing his first wife. Qiu got pregnant and three months later they registered their marriage in her hometown in Shandong Province.

But in July 2013, Qiu found out that Shen had not only deceived her but was also seeing his ex-wife, a woman surnamed Ding.

Shen also cooked up stories about his career and experiences to swindle his wives between 2010 and 2013. He used to list himself as a partner in a yacht club, the vice president of an aero club and a relative of state leaders.

Among his many victims were people who gave him nearly 1.5 million yuan, the court heard.
