Man on trial for pouring hot water on child
A MAN, who poured boiling water on a 1-year-old boy, stood on trial yesterday for causing intentional injury, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said.
The 26-year-old suspect Lin Feng harmed the baby in an act of revenge after a dispute with his tenant and his wife.
Prosecutors said Lin was upset with his tenant, Li Yong, over some trivial matters.
On April 7 last year, Lin asked Li’s wife Chen Jie to buy him breakfast but she refused.
Angry, he ordered the couple to move out of his house. Lin later tried to sell Li’s electric bicycle to get his rent.
Chen saw Lin trying to sell the bike and ran out to stop the deal from going through. The suspect then got into the flat and locked Chen out.
While inside, he reportedly poured boiling water on the sleeping child, causing about 35 percent burns.
Lin confessed to causing harm to the baby. But he and his lawyer argued that the tenants should also shoulder part of the blame because they failed to take care of the baby well and left him alone.
Lin’s lawyer also claimed he suffered from mental problems in the hope of getting a lighter punishment for his client.
Lin told prosecutors that he feared that Li would try to beat him up and thought of hurting the baby to force them to move out of his place.
The court has yet to give a verdict. After the trial yesterday, Li told Shanghai Daily he had no sympathy for the suspect.
“How could he say it was our fault that we left the baby alone in the room?
“My wife ran down to stop him from selling my bike!”
Li said after they rented the place, Lin would walk in often and used sexually-expletive words that made them uncomfortable. “After Lin was taken by police, he even denied that he injured the baby and said my wife carelessly poured boiling water on him.”
Li hoped the court would give a just verdict as they still needed some 1.7 million yuan (US$277,995) to treat their son of the burns.
