Man on trial for ramming car into people, killing 2
A MAN stood on trial yesterday for killing two people and injuring six others with his car during a confrontation that turned violent between two property management companies in the Pudong New Area, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said.
Prosecutors told the court that a dispute broke out around midnight on January 1 when the Tonglai Property Management Co came to take charge of the Datang Shengshi Community on 801 Yinghua Road but was stopped by the old management company Shengtang.
Shengtang refused to move out as it claimed that the right procedures were not carried out for management changes.
The suspect Hu Rong, who worked for Shengtang, parked his black Santana at the entrance of the community to stop the new company from taking over.
But it soon turned violent and Hu’s car was smashed with iron rods. Hu then drove the car at a high speed — 75 kilometers per hour — and rammed it into a crowd of people. Two people died and six others were injured, prosecutors said. Hu fled from the scene.
At the trial yesterday, Hu, 52, admitted he knocked down people but claimed he did not do it with the intention to kill and that it definitely did not involve eight people.
“I drove back to look for my boss and asked him not to continue with the fight,” Hu said, adding that the Shengtang boss was his nephew. “The road was empty and I did not see anyone until I hit them,” Hu said. “I fled because I was afraid I would be beaten by them.”
Prosecutors, however, suggested that Hu rammed into the crowd deliberately after people from Tonglai smashed his car.
Prosecutors played a police surveillance video of the incident at the court. The video clearly shows a Santana driving in the middle of Yinghua Road, turning right at the gate of the community and crashing into people. After some people were knocked down, the car drove away from the scene.
“It is obvious there was a crowd. The road ahead of the car was empty. Why did Hu suddenly change his lane?” prosecutors argued in the court.
Hu insisted he did not see anybody, partly because he was shortsighted and the right front light was smashed.
One of the victims died on the spot, while the other died on the way to the hospital with head injuries.
Prosecutors said Hu drove to Shinan Road where the car broke down. He abandoned the car and went to his sister’s place. He then surrendered to police after being informed that there were casualties.
The families of the two victims and of the four people injured in the incident have filed compensation claims against Hu, the court was told.
A verdict was not announced.
