Man put on trial in Putuo for blackmail
A MAN is standing trial on blackmailing charges after he threatened to harm his lover’s family following a failed bid to get money out of her, the Putuo People’s Procuratorate said on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old man, surnamed Yang, met a married woman Bao, who was five years older than him, at a dancing club in 2002.
As Yang did not have a regular job, Bao covered most of their spending, but Yang still often asked her for money.
“I spent more than 400,000 yuan (US$64,500) on him,” Bao told the prosecutors.
In 2012, Bao decided to end the relationship, which Yang initially declined. At the end of that year, Yang finally agreed to end the relationship and asked 5,000 yuan from Bao “one last time.” But in Spring Festival in 2015, Yang met Bao again and demanded a red envelope of 2,000 yuan. She refused and Yang threatened to kill her family members.
Bao told her husband about the affair and they reported the matter to the police.
