Man sentenced to jail for stealing designer clothes

A man who stole designer clothes totaling 23,000 yuan (US$3,650) from three local commercial plazas was sentenced to 20 months in prison, Jing'an District People's Court said today.

Gu Lin, 23, was also fined 20,000 yuan for theft, the court ruled.

Prosecutors said Gu stole a Burberry jacket priced at 9,000 yuan from the Bailian Outlets Plaza in Qingpu District last October and walked off with an Emporio Armani men's jacket worth 9,500 yuan from a mall on Nanjing Road W. last November.

On December 5 last year Gu targeted a shopping center in Xuhui District and stole clothes and accessories totaling 4,634 yuan from the boutiques of Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Tony Jeans, Levi's and Le coq sportif.

Gu was caught by police when he was stealing food from a Huaihai Road store on the same day and confessed to his thefts, prosecutors said.

The court learned that Gu quit his job in a hair salon and lived by stealing. The convict said he liked designer clothes very much and stole them to satisfy his vanity.
