Man ‘set fire to room and drove away’

A man, accused of setting fire to a room to destroy his details on a package, will be tried for arson, Jing’an District prosecutors said.

The suspect surnamed Wang, 37, ran a company at an innovation park. At 1am on May 13, he returned to his office and unpacked a parcel sent to him, prosecutors said.

On his way to the garbage room to throw away the empty package, he noticed his name, address and phone number on a label. To avoid anyone seeing such information, he lit the package. But the fire went out. Then, he lit a piece of wastepaper and threw it into the garbage room and returned to his office, prosecutors said.

Five minutes later, fire engulfed the room, but Wang neglected to do anything about it and drove home. A security guard noticed the fire and raised the alarm, prosecutors said.

A fire engine arrived, at which point part of the room and electric wires were burnt, resulting in economic losses of more than 20,000 yuan (US$2,875), prosecutors added.

They said that no one was injured because the fire took place in the wee hours.
