Man strangles grandmother, surrenders

A 21-YEAR-OLD man who strangled his 88-year-old grandmother to death with a towel and an electrical wire called and surrendered to police.

The young man, surnamed Zhao, called police about 10:50pm on Monday, saying he had killed his grandmother at home after a dispute over trivial matters.

When police arrived at the residential complex on Chengdu Road N. in Huangpu District, they found the elderly woman’s body and detained Zhao.

A neighborhood committee official told Shanghai Daily that Zhao looked after his grandmother, surnamed Lin, for over two years after his father died in 2011.

As his parents were divorced when he was only two years old, the burden of supporting the family fell on him.

“Lin had intended to leave her house to her grandson Zhao, because of which other relatives bore a grudge against her,” the official said.

“Zhao did all the housework in the family and often took Lin to hospital,” she said.

“He saved her life two years ago. When she was seriously ill and needed a pacemaker, he begged his mother to pay for the medical device,” she said.

“But Lin was also too strict on him,” she said.

The official, who refused to be identified, said Zhao used to work as an intern in a company. But Lin would call him back anytime even when he was busy at work.

Zhao reportedly suffered from depression after spending years looking after his wheelchair-bound grandmother.
