Man sues 2 firms in checkin info breach

The plaintiff in a case involving the leaking of 20 million pieces of checkin data demanded a compensation of 200,000 yuan (US$32,960) from Hanting Inns & Hotels and Cnwisdom, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.

Wang Jinlong accused the hotel chain and the Zhejiang-based network company of leaking his personal information after he checked into a Hanting inn in December 2012.

His leaked data subjected him to spam messages and unsolicited offers from advertisers, he claimed.

Wang, 35, said he prepared four pieces of evidence at yesterday’s session to exchange evidence at the court, including his identity and the two companies’ registration information, notarization of the data leak, his checkin confirmation and a statement against their defense.

He demanded the two companies compensate him 200,000 yuan and an apology, and asked Cnwisdom to stop collecting checkin information from other sources.

A marketing employee of Cnwisdom, surnamed Chen, said the company didn’t have  checkin information in its database and did not cooperate with Hanting.

He said Cnwisdom would even like to offer 200,000 yuan to anyone that can “find out the truth.”
