Man took 300,000 yuan in scam
A 40-year-old local man surnamed Deng has been arrested for defrauding seven women of more than 300,000 yuan (US$44,000) by pretending to be a government official, police said yesterday.
Deng admitted he hooked up with the women, most of whom were from out of town, on dating websites and falsely claimed that he could help them get Shanghai hukou or have their kids enrolled in Shanghai schools in return for “bribery fees.”
He registered accounts on the dating websites with his real name but false employment data, police said. Victims alerted police in June after they noticed Deng was in touch with several women and making the same offers.
Deng, in detention in Changning District, told Shanghai Daily that he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2014 for the same crime and after sitting out his term, played the same tricks again from the end of last year.
