Man turns a wrong phone call into a big fraud

A man who received a wrong call but pretended to be the right person to defraud the victim of 74,000 yuan (US$11,766) was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 1,000 yuan, the Baoshan District People's Court said yesterday.

Prosecutors said the victim surnamed Shen dialed a wrong number that connected him with the convict surnamed Lin last July. Lin found Shen mistook him as a cigarette supplier and was anxious to replenish the stock of his supermarket.

Pouncing on this rare opportunity, Lin asked Shen to transfer 20,000 yuan to his bank account. After getting the money, Lin claimed he had some more cigarettes and could sell to Shen at a discount price.

Shen then transferred 54,000 yuan more to Lin's account but never received his goods, the prosecutors said. The victim reported to the police after realizing he dialed a wrong number.

In a separate case, a mother received a wrong call and was cheated of 20,000 yuan as she mistook the dialer as her son studying in Japan. She transferred the money after the "son" claimed he was running out of money in Japan.
