Man wanted for theft of US$46,000 worth of gold
POLICE are hunting for a man who stole about 300,000 yuan (US$46,300) worth of gold chains from a jewelry store in Qingpu District.
The suspect broke into the shop, which is inside a shopping center, about 2:20am on Monday and left with 42 gold chains with a combined weight of about 1 kilogram, local police said yesterday.
The store’s owner, surnamed Zhou, was alerted to the crime by the in-store security system and the whole incident was caught on surveillance camera. The thief, however, had fled the scene before police arrived.
“The robber seemed to be very familiar with the store’s layout as he went straight to the counter where most of the valuables are kept,” Zhou was quoted as saying.
“Most of the high-value items were in the safe, but we had a lot of stock because of the Christmas holiday, so some of it was just locked inside the counters. He didn’t touch the safe,” he said.
The security footage showed that the suspect got into the shopping mall by breaking a window in a nearby restaurant.
It then took him about 30 minutes to break into the jewelry shop, police said, adding that he cut his hand in the process.
The theft is the sixth from a gold shop reported in Shanghai this year, police said.
